Who I Am
Who I Am
Hi, I'm Fraser
When I think about it, I guess I’ve been talking people into things all my life. Yep, I was that kid at school who had the troublemaking idea that seemed like fun that got other kids into trouble! For as long as I can remember, I’ve been fascinated by the idea of influence, and how we can use that influence to make each other better human beings.
In my first career, I was a political organizer and strategist, culminating with his stints as Special Advisor to the Premier of Ontario and National Director (CEO) of Canada’s NDP. But, when my daughter was little, I was missing out on too much of her life, so I decided on a career change so that I could be the best dad I could be.
I then joined a national fundraising consulting agency called Good Works, where I was instrumental in generating a seismic shift in marketing gifts in wills to middle class donors using direct response channels. I also brought my political market research skills (polling and focus groups) with me and helped make donor research an accepted best practice in the philanthropic sector.
I’m the author, co-author and contributing author to four books including Iceberg Philanthropy and You Can’t Take It With You: The Art and Science of Legacy Fundraising. Fraser is also an internationally-known blogger and a sought-after keynote speaker who has addressed fundraising conferences in Canada, the USA and Europe.
I was the recipient of the Ottawa AFP Fundraiser of the Year Award in 2007 and well as the lifetime achievement award Friend of CAGP in 2023.
In September of 2024, I retired from Good Works after 28 amazing years. I’m now pursuing my yoga teaching certification, honing my pickleball chops and trying to get my golf score into the 80s consistently! And, I’m still writing, coaching and strategizing with clients – only on a less frantic pace.
Now, I’m an independent consultant in philanthropy where I have the luxury of choosing to do interesting work on causes I care about with people I like a lot! If you think I might be helpful to you in building your fundraising program, I’d love to hear from you!
